Gustave Vidal was a French painter best known for his depictions of Provençal landscapes and harbor towns in the French Riviera. His thick impasto technique, applied with both palette knife and brush, was influenced by Impressionism and the abstract work he came across while spending time in Paris.Vidal studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Avignon where he won many awards; he exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Francais of which he was a member. He painted the landscapes of inland Provence and the coasts of Marseilles as well as was an illustrator of books.
